This Week: State and National Strategies

Find out what’s happening at the national and state levels of Indivisible, and how we can work with, influence, and get support at this Monday’s meeting!

We’re excited to bring back Marguerite Suozzo-Gole, Indivisible National’s New England liaison, (and Northampton native!), and Michael Ansara, organizer of Indivisible MA, to talk about National’s work and organizing strategy and to invite a brainstorm about how we can mobilize and maximize our impact in the coming year.

This meeting is being co-sponsored by the Pioneer Valley Resist Coalition.

Whose House? Our House!

Our chapter celebrated the swearing in of the new House with a gathering outside of Jim McGovern’s office downtown. We had about 25 people, including some new folks interested in Indivisible Northampton, and press coverage by the Republican – and on MassLive, with a picture!!

Team News

Elections Team

Thank you

to everyone who helped out with the mid-term elections in one way or another. Although it was not the overwhelming Blue Wave that we were all hoping for, we flipped the House of Representatives, which is a big deal. There will now be a meaningful check on Trump and his out-of-control presidency. A lot of people did a lot of work to make this happen, and you should be proud! The Elections Team is still on hiatus, gathering our strength for 2020.

Protecting Democracy Team

Our next meeting will be on a Wednesday in January, the exact date TBA, at 7:30, upstairs at Packard’s.

Medicare For All Team

The Medicare for All group continues working to advance the cause of Single-Payer bills in the State Legislature.

The Northampton group will have met with Lindsay Sabadosa on January 4 to discuss the status of these bills in the State House. Lindsay is the lead sponsor of the Medicare for All Bill and we will work to support her.

We want to enlist as many legislators as possible to co-sponsor the Medicare for All Bill. We will contact our friends in districts in the Commonwealth where there are no active advocacy groups to ask them to contact their representatives in the House and Senate to encourage them to co-sponsor the legislation. The House rules require that co-sponsorship be declared within the next few weeks. The Senate rules are more flexible.

Some of us plan to travel to Boston for a legislative lobby day later in January.

Discussions are underway within the Western Mass group to consider joining the statewide Mass-Care coalition, to broaden and strengthen support.

Our next meetings are:

Full Western Mass. Medicare-for-All group:
Wednesday, January 9, at 6:30 pm,
in the Community Room at Hampton Court,
20 Hampton Ave, Northampton

Northampton Hub of West Mass. Medicare For All
Tuesday, January 15, at 7 pm,
at Pathways in Florence.
(Our hub group meets on the third Tuesday of each month).

Everyone is invited and welcome to either or both meetings.

The Campus Outreach Committee

Our next meeting will be in February, time and place TBA.
