Save the Dates
Please reserve time on The Last Weekend before Election Day to help us get out the vote in important swing districts! Nov 3-6 we will be making a final push to get people to the polls to elect progressive candidates! More details to follow.
The next election team meeting will be on Thursday, October 25 from 6:30-7:30 PM at 18 Center Street.
Protecting Democracy Team
The Protecting Democracy team is continuing to work on the Court Watch project. We are also thinking about volunteering for a project called Ballots Over Bars. The project, which aims for maximum voter registration of incarcerated people.
BALLOTS OVER BARS:
In MA, people who are currently incarcerated on misdemeanor charges are eligible to vote. People who are incarcerated for felony convictions are not eligible to vote until they are release from prison.
In June 2018, Ballots Over Bars launched their first-ever Jail Voting Signup Project, to ensure that the approximately 10,000 eligible voters who are incarcerated in Massachusetts are able to cast their ballots and make their voices heard in the 2018 primary and general election.
Elly’s organization is working with volunteers across the state to: contact their local sheriff, explain that the majority of people incarcerated in county jails are eligible to vote, and offer to bring absentee ballot applications into the jails to help people sign up to vote.
Volunteers will then follow up with town clerks to ensure that absentee ballot applications are received and handled appropriately, and assist voters in filling out the absentee ballots, once received.
The next team meeting will be on Wednesday, October 24, at 7:30, upstairs at Packard’s.
Medicare For All Team
The Medicare-for-All group is focusing on building grassroots support for the non-binding ballot question (Number 4), which would instruct our legislative representatives to implement a Single-Payer Health Care Plan in MA.
We are hosting multiple showings of the brief movie “Fix-It, Healthcare at the Tipping Point”, followed by discussions led by activists and physicians. There are two upcoming showings in our area, both free and open to the public:
- October 22, 2018, at 7pm at the Chesterfield Grange/ Council on Aging, 400 Main Road (in the center of town on Route 143). After the film, local physicians Dr. Peter Siersma and Dr. Chris Flory, and activist Beth Eisenberg, will discuss the issues and answer questions.
- Saturday, October 27, at 2:30pm at the Lilly Library, 19 Meadow Street in Florence, on . We encourage you to come for a lively discussion, and feel free to bring 100 of your closest friends, too.
If you have any questions about other presentations of the movie and discussion groups, please email Larry Pareles.
We also are doing media outreach, including some cable TV interviews, radio spot advertisements, and also plan to hold signs at some busy downtown locales, and at polling stations on Election Day.
Please ask your local family and friends to vote “Yes” on Ballot Question #4.
