With a grass roots campaign that started in February 2010, and with his own hard work and that of a great group of volunteers, John F. Keenan was elected to the Massachusetts State Senate with a convincing win over a republican candidate and an independent candidate. On January 5, 2011, John was sworn in as the State Senator for the Norfolk and Plymouth District, representing the City of Quincy, several precincts in Braintree, and all of Abington, Holbrook and Rockland.
John’s first year in the Senate was marked by hard work, and effective advocacy on behalf of his district. As a first year legislator, he quickly succeeded in passing a home rule petition critical to the redevelopment of downtown Quincy. He sheparded through the Senate legislation that allowed for the design/build of the Petersen Pool and a track at the Braintree High School, as well as a supplemental appropriation for the Rockland senior center project, funding for school grounds work in Holbrook, and school work in Abington.
As Senate Chair of the Joint Committee on Mental Health and Substance Abuse, John authored An Act Relative to Prescription Drug Diversion, Abuse and Addiction, legislation which has been described as life saving, and which passed the Senate unanimously. He was actively engaged in Senate debate on municipal health care and pension reform, calling for responsible changes in both areas, and was an outspoken opponent of the the gaming legislation, arguing that the legislation promised too little in return compared to the social costs associated with gaming.
As John enters his second year in the State Senate, he has quickly gained a reputation of being an active, effective legislator. As when he served on the City Council in Quincy, he remains more concerned with performance and results than with politics. As the Patriot Ledger noted, John is “smart, knowledgeable and a straight arrow.”
